Gary had been trying to find someone local who could take a design he had purchased online and make it work for his purposes.  As it turned out, the design he purchased had a bunch of Flash that made it very difficult to modify.  I basically re-created the look of the design he bought, but dumped the Flash and added some PHP fed JavaScript slideshows (12 of them on the home page) and gave him a way to upload photographs that a script on the server resized, created thumbnails and moved to a folder for each of the 12 slideshows.  What he ended up with was the ability to change the photos that come up in the slideshows himself.  No need to call the web guy.

Once he got the “do crazy stuff with my website” bug, he had me add a custom blog that he uses to showcase shoots and let people download low resolution versions of their photos for use on sites like Facebook, add a music player that let him choose specific music based on the page, add a full blown photo gallery that lets him upload as many photos as he likes (I think there are a couple thousand as of today) and a way to upload tips and coupons to go with specific photo galleries.  Very fun site.  Gary really knows how to test my creativity in coding.

Century 21 The Neil Company Real Estate

I took over development or The Neil Company in about 2005 or 2006.  Since then I’ve done 3 total redesigns.  Franchises like this are a challenge because you have to take the client’s wishes for design and make it work within the legal constraints of the marketing guidelines of the parent company.

Along with all the normal IDX stuff, Neil Company also wanted to be able to add/edit/delete broker bios from their website on their own.  As time went on, it morphed from a very basic name, phone, email and bio to social networking icons, a property list along with the bio info, multiple contact numbers and so on.

I have also integrated a custom WordPress blog to help them with their search engine ranking.  Neil posts a helpful real estate related article a couple times a week and, voila, they’re ranked much higher in Google.

The latest iteration of their site includes some pretty cool features like accordion menus, Google maps showing other similar listings within a certain distance of the listing you’re looking at, mortgage and tax information on each listing and integration of a special C-21 lead router deal that lets them track email leads from their website and print ads.

All in all a pretty cool site for a very cool client.

Winston Area Community Partnership

This is actually the second version of this website.  When I did the first, they didn’t have much budget and didn’t really know how much they would use their website.  They asked for a pretty static site and, to be honest, WordPress hadn’t really become a functional Content Management System yet.  After having a website for a few years they had a much better idea what they wanted and how they could use it.  I sat down with them, listened to their needs and we decided that WordPress was definitely the answer.  I was able to customize a template so it looked very much like their old site (a design they really liked) and gave them the flexibility they needed to be able to add pages, change text and even manage their own events list and calendar.

They’ve been using this site for about a year now and have had no issues with managing events, editing text or adding photos to slideshows in posts and on pages.  I consider this site a real win.

Permanent Cosmetics NW

Permanent Cosmetics NW, located in Eugene, OR, is among the leaders of the Permanent Cosmetic industry in the Northwest.  When they needed a website they could manage and update themselves, they called me.  I was able to give them a custom WordPress site with slideshows and testimonials that they could manage 100% on their own.  They are now able to add testimonials, change text, add/remove pages, change colors and manage the slideshows of their procedures without any intervention on my part.

All in all, a big win for everyone.  No more waiting for a busy web guy to make changes for them and a successful first website in a new industry for me.

Downtown Roseburg Association

This is a custom WordPress site I did for the local Downtown Association.  They wanted something that didn’t cost a fortune that they could keep updated themselves.  I was able to do a custom layout, event calendar, photo gallery, slideshows, document manager and many other things in pretty short order and cheap enough that I don’t even want to tell you what I gave it to them for.  :)

If you need a website that you can keep updated yourself, a custom WordPress site is perfect in most cases.  There are literally thousands of free add-ons you can download and install to make your site function any way you need.

Weathering Springs

Cassie Soule, the horse whisperer of Douglas County (not really, I just call her that) needed a website to do some passive marketing as well as list horses for sale and announce upcoming events at her ranch.  When she was selected to take part in the Mustang Challenge (kind of a big deal, if you’re in the horse world) she also needed a way to post regular updates to keep her sponsors in the loop.  I created a custom WordPress Blog that matched her site design and allowed her an easy way to make everyone feel like they were part of the action.
